The all-new Mazda MPV will feature a smaller, more-powerful engine.
Mazda will be unveiling an all-new MPV at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, along with the SENKU and MX-Crossport concept vehicles, the Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid concept, the next-generation MZR 2.3 DISI Turbo engine and Advanced Driver-Support Technologies.
The all-new MPV, to be launched first in Japan as part of its global rollout, features evolutionary styling inside and out and dynamic performance typical of Mazda's "zoom-zoom" DNA. The rigid new body structure ensures sporty handling without compromising a comfortable ride.
Power for the show vehicle will be provided by the new direct-injection MZR 2.3 DISI Turbo engine, linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The combination is reputed to deliver high fuel-efficiency and low emissions, along with unminivan-like performance.
Thanks to direct injection and a turbocharger, the new engine achieves a high, flat torque curve and throttle response belying its relatively small 2.3-litre displacement. Mazda says it is comparable to a 3.5 to 4-litre V6 power plant, yet is the only turbo engine produced in Japan to meet SULEV (Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles) standards.
In addition to application in the new MPV, the new MZR 2.3L DISI Turbo will also be available in the Mazdaspeed6.
At 183 inches (15.3 feet) long, 73 inches across, and 55 inches in height, the Senku is a full nine inches longer, three inches wider, and two inches taller than an RX-8. It also sits on an extravagantly long, 122-inch wheelbase (sixteen inches longer than the RX-8's). Access to the sumptuous cabin is via massive, electrically operated "flying wing" sliding doors.
The sleek exterior represents a possible direction for Mazda's next-generation styling. A two-stage, power-operated hatch lid moves up and out, and the rearmost part of the glass roof incorporates solar panels that help charge the hybrid battery.
Inside, the dashboard, the slim designer seats, and the door trim are finished in high-quality leather. Normally, the Senku is a two-seater, but the space behind the seats can be used either for storage or to adapt the car to a two-plus-two. The high-tech, two-level dash features a three-panel display on the top half displaying images from outside the car via on-board cameras. The lower half displays the audio and climate-control systems.
The Senku's instruments--such as the speedo, the tach, and other gauges--plus the car's sat-nav system sit within a stylish, thick-rimmed steering wheel, also finished off in red leather.
The totally new, Mazda-designed, rotary hybrid system uses a new direct-injection, two-rotor engine, combined with a motor, a generator, and a battery. The battery's location between the engine and the firewall, combined with the compact rotary engine's front-midship layout, helps create 50/50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity. This hybrid system also features an idling-stop system to boost economy and emissions.
There's more. Beneath the skin, Senku features a new type of "multi-frame" body construction supporting the engine and front suspension, designed to save weight and improve impact safety over a conventional chassis rail system. Virtual B-pillars are fitted inside the backs of the sliding doors to help maintain sufficient body rigidity despite the huge side door openings.
The Senku has a seven-speed transmission and dry twin-plate clutch. The suspension consists of double wishbones at the front and a multilink rear setup. The concepts rides on monster 235/40R-22 Yokohama Advan Prototype 005 tires.
Is the Senku the next RX-8? Maybe not, but it's one of the most interesting cars at this year's show.
The Mazda Washu, Japanese for Eagle's Wing, is an innovative six-seat concept that presents a new genre of vehicles. It is well proportioned and features Mazda's product DNA in every aspect of the vehicle. Low and sleek, the six-seat concept also works to tear down the barriers that traditionally separate sports cars and family cars.
Modern proportions combined with the wide, low-slung layout are applied to the exterior. The beltline extends slightly outward to provide a sense of enhanced interior spaciousness, while the glass area is maximized by reaching upward to the roof to provide an open, airy feeling in the cabin. The roof also incorporates extensive glass area to further enhance the spacious feeling. The exterior design has been evolved through an elimination of side mirrors and the use of sleek LED headlamps. In addition, the LED headlamps are equipped with an Automatic Focusing System (AFS) linked to the vehicle's steering mechanism. This system enhances visibility while cornering at night by adjusting the direction of the light as the vehicles steers through a corner.
The 'airplane doors' first open outward and then slide rearward. With the sliding door fully extended, the doors provide an opening that measures 1,100mm across, with an additional 400-mm opening in the roof section. This allows passengers to enter the vehicle in an almost upright position, making it dramatically easier.
The Washu concept benefits from a low, flat floor and long wheelbase, both of which help to maximize interior space. The seats in the Washu are captain's chairs and can be arranged in a flexible manner to accommodate a variety of passenger and cargo-carrying chores. The middle pair of seats is electrically powered and can be independently moved fore-and-aft a full 645mm. The seats can also slide to the side to allow easier access to the rearmost seats.
Eliminating the need for a traditional steering shaft, steer-by-wire technology also makes it possible to neatly store the steering wheel inside the instrument panel when the vehicle is parked. Further, the adjustable instrument panel makes access to the front of the car more convenient, as it can be moved upward a full 300mm - and steering wheel stowed - making getting in or out of the front seats particularly easy. In addition to this, from the stowed position, an ID card is used to automatically deploy the instrument panel and steering wheel into the driving position.

Ponudba pogonskih agregatov ostaja nespremenjena. Na voljo so trije bencinski in en dizelski motor, ki sedaj izpolnjuje normo Euro4.
