During our dyno tests of ProjectMx3 we have noticed that significant power is lost when we close the hood. The open filter system sucks in hot air from the engine bay and reduces power output by 10 HP on our project car. By relocating the air filter and ducting fresh air we will retrieve the power lost during normal operation.
We also expect increased power at high speeds due the ram air effect.
As you can see from the picture we ducted the air filter into the pocket behind and below the driver side headlight. We used the HKS 6" filter we had already installed. A K&N cone style filter could also be used in this location. This area is more or less shaped like a box. The fresh air flow is restricted in this "box" unless modifications are made. We cut sheet metal in the area shown in the pictures below to supply fresh air.
The air duct in the Mazdaspeed nose actually exposes the bottom 1/3 of the hole in the picture. In order to make this system as efficient as possible we ran ducting from the bumper to the hole to effectively use the entire hole we cut out.

Well many of you may have heard that my MX-3 is now AWD. Well this is true. after over a year of buying and safign parts and reasearch. I converted the car to AWD in just around a month and a half. threw AUG. i did it 100% by my lownsom and took aprox 60 to 70 hrs from start to finnish. With a hoist and Jackstands and the help of a doner car, it drives awsome. well worth it. Im not finnished by a long shot but its a work in progress. Just some tid bits of info, The trans is a GTR trans from Japan with the Viscus LSD center diff, the rear end is from an AWD Protege.
Bi bil zanimiv projekt tole, samo jaz bi raje obdr?al samo RWD oz. tudi AWD nebi bilo slabo.
Tole je res ?udno, ker ?e bere? po forumih jih res dost pluva po apexih a a3m-ju je rekel da reklamacije na apex ?e ni imel in da imajo tako ali tako 5 let garancije, je pa res da se jih tudi najve? proda, je pa mogo?e res da se kak?ni te?ki avti posedejo, kaj pa vem. Pri nas na forumu pa ne vem kolk jih ma apex.
Za nalepke je treba na kak?no sre?anje prit, z majicami ne vem kako bo ker komarja ?e neki ?asa jaz nisem videl.
Za tatto je pa kar dobra cena, jaz sem imel 2 leti ga gor in se mi skor ni? ne pozna, samo ?e res dobro se pogleda. Ne verjet da bo barva ?la dol ker Project ima ?udn avto pobarvan
